Our Vision
Deanwood Heights Main Street's vision is to build a thriving commercial corridor that honors its rich cultural heritage while fostering economic opportunity for small businesses, improving public spaces, and welcoming residents and visitors alike.
PROGRAM HISTORY AND APPROACH
HISTORY
Established in 2009, Deanwood Heights Main Street (DHMS) is a designated DC Main Street and a proud affiliate of Main Street America, a national network dedicated to revitalizing historic commercial districts. Originally managed by the Ward 7 Business Partnership, DHMS led transformative efforts to revitalize Deanwood’s business corridors through small business subgrants, technical assistance, storefront improvements, local festivals, and beautification projects. The program has supported dozens of small businesses and brought beloved community events like Art All Night and the Deanwood Business and Community Festival to life.
In 2024, Marshall Heights Community Development Organization (MHCDO) assumed leadership of DHMS, marking a new chapter in its legacy. Under MHCDO’s leadership, DHMS continues to advance inclusive economic growth, promote cultural preservation, and build a vibrant destination that showcases the unique character, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit of Deanwood.
APPROACH
DC Main Streets builds on the Main Street Approach® that was developed by the National Main Street Center in 1980 to assist commercial revitalization efforts nationwide. The Approach consists of four points which work together to build a sustainable and complete community revitalization effort in the following areas:
From the desk of the director
Welcome to Deanwood Heights Main Street (DHMS) – a proud program of the Marshall Heights Community Development Organization (MHCDO) dedicated to revitalizing and celebrating the Deanwood community. As Director, I have the privilege of working alongside incredible business owners, residents, and partners who are deeply invested in shaping a more vibrant, resilient Deanwood. Every subgrant, community event, and public improvement represents our shared commitment to creating pride and opportunity right here at home.
DHMS provides valuable resources including grants, marketing assistance, and business development workshops designed to empower local entrepreneurs to grow, adapt, and thrive in an ever-evolving marketplace.
Beyond business support, we’re committed to celebrating Deanwood’s rich cultural and historical legacy. From guided tours of Marvin Gaye Park to events that highlight local artists, makers, and culture bearers, we’re inviting people from all over the DMV to discover what residents have always known – Deanwood is a place of creativity, pride, and possibility.
This year, our focus is making Deanwood a true destination. We’re working to improve building facades, attract new businesses, increase foot traffic, and create lasting economic opportunities for all.
Join us as we continue transforming Deanwood into a thriving hub of culture, commerce, and community.
