MHCDO has provided access to many of the DC government’s leaders through its First Fridays program introducing small business owners to different resources dedicated to business expansion and filing compliance. In 2019, a major initiative was launched to increase community partnerships with those dedicated to capacity and skills building among aspiring entrepreneurs and newer small businesses. Small business programs include:
- The on-site Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) whose daily operations are supported
- By the Greater Washington Urban League/United Way;
- Regular workshops or counseling sessions sponsored by DC departments – DC Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) and the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD).
- MHCDO manages the Pennsylvania Avenue East Main Street program sponsored by DSLBD.
- An eight-week class taught by staff of Operation HOPE in addition to a credit and money management course preparing entrepreneurs for establishing business loans and lines of credit;

About THE PRogram
The Pennsylvania Avenue East Main Street Program (PAEMS) assists businesses and coordinate sustainable community-driven revitalization efforts along the Pennsylvania Avenue, SE corridor from the John P. Sousa Bridge to Southern Avenue, SE.
It was established in 2020, as a Main Street America affiliate and a member of DC Main Streets.
